Senior Advocate R Venkataramani To Continue As Attorney General For India

The Union government has extended the tenure of Senior Advocate R Venkataramani as Attorney General (AG) for India for another 2 years.

His current 3-year term was set to end on September 30, 2025.

Venkataramani said he will continue in the post until 2027. He had succeeded KK Venugopal as the country’s top law officer in 2022.

Legal Career Spanning Nearly 5 Decades

Born on April 13, 1950, in Pondicherry, Venkataramani enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu in July 1977. Two years later, in 1979, he shifted his practice to the Supreme Court of India.

In 1997, the Supreme Court designated him as a Senior Advocate, recognizing his expertise and contributions to the legal field. Over the years, he has represented the Central government, multiple State governments, universities, and public sector undertakings before both the Supreme Court and various High Courts.

Stints In Law Commission Of India

Venkataramani also served as a member of the Law Commission of India twice, in 2010 and 2013, where he was involved in several key reports and recommendations on legal reforms.

The Attorney General for India is the highest law officer in the country, appointed under Article 76(1) of the Constitution by the President, on the advice of the Central government. The AG is responsible for advising the Union government on legal matters and representing it in the Supreme Court.

With this extension, Venkataramani will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the government’s legal strategy in high-stakes matters before the apex court.
