Sheena Bora
After a 4-month pause, the trial in the high-profile Sheena Bora murder case is set to resume on a day-to-day basis from March 10, following the transfer of the special judge overseeing the case.
The last significant hearing took place on October 23, 2024, before Special CBI Judge S.P. Naik Nimbalkar was transferred, causing a delay in proceedings.
Newly appointed Special Judge J.P. Darekar informed both the prosecution and defense that the trial will now proceed daily, as per the directive of the Bombay High Court.
Sheena Bora, 24, was allegedly strangled to death in April 2012 inside a car by her mother, Indrani Mukerjea, along with her then-driver, Shyamvar Rai, and former husband, Sanjeev Khanna. The trio is accused of burning her body and disposing of it in a forested area in Raigad district.
Media baron Peter Mukerjea, Indrani’s ex-husband, is also implicated in the case. The murder remained undetected until 2015, when Rai, arrested in an unrelated case, confessed to his involvement, exposing the crime.
Indrani Mukerjea and Sanjeev Khanna were arrested in August 2015, while Peter Mukerjea was taken into custody 3 months later. All accused are currently out on bail.
The trial commenced in February 2017 after charges were framed against them. Out of the 237 prosecution witnesses listed, more than 90 have been examined by the court so far.
With the trial set to proceed daily, the case is expected to gain momentum after years of delays.
