Singer Sonu Nigam has issued a public apology to the people of Karnataka for his alleged comments that reportedly hurt the sentiments of the Kannadiga community during a recent show in Bengaluru.
Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, Sonu expressed that his affection for Karnataka outweighs any personal ego.
Sonu’s Apology
In his Instagram post, Sonu wrote, “Sorry, Karnataka. My love for you, is bigger than my ego. Love you always.” The remarks followed a controversy that arose at his performance in Bengaluru last month, where the singer was allegedly confronted by some fans over his refusal to perform in Kannada.
Fans’ Reactions To The Apology
The apology has stirred mixed reactions among fans. One fan remarked, “Karnataka, you’ve done very wrong to this person. He loves and respects Kannadigas so much that he apologized and clarified the situation multiple times, but no one from Karnataka said a word against those 4-5 guys.”
Other fans voiced similar sentiments, with one commenting, “You’ve apologized multiple times, but will those 4-5 students apologize publicly as well? Shame on those!!” Another supporter praised Sonu’s humility, saying, “Sonu ji, your humility is truly inspiring. Sending you endless positive vibes.”
Some fans expressed disappointment with the ongoing opposition, with one writing, “Great loss of respect for people who are still against Sonu, sir. In fact, it’s a loss for Karnataka industry.”
Legal Action & FIR
Meanwhile, the controversy escalated when Bengaluru police issued a notice to Sonu Nigam, asking him to appear for questioning within a week. The notice follows the filing of an FIR by the Avalahalli Police Station in Bengaluru Rural District, accusing the singer of making hurtful remarks about the Kannadiga community during the event. The incident, which was captured on video, shows Sonu refusing to sing in Kannada after being reportedly threatened by a few individuals in the crowd.
At the event, Sonu also made a comparison with the Pahalgam attack, which further fueled the debate.
Singer’s Clarification
Sonu posted a message on social media on Monday clarifying his stance. He explained that he was deeply offended by the actions of a few individuals who had threatened him in front of a large audience. In his message, he stated, “I am not a young lad to take humiliation from anyone. I am 51 years old, in the second half of my life, and am entitled to take offence for someone as young as my son threatening me directly in front of thousands in the name of language—especially Kannada, which is my second language when it comes to my work. That too after my first song of the concert! He provoked a few more. Their own people were embarrassed and were asking them to shut up.”
Sonu’s clarification and subsequent apology reflect his effort to resolve the issue and maintain his love and respect for the Kannadiga community despite the controversy.
