Special Court Convicts Vijay Darda, HC Gupta, Manoj Jayaswal, Others Accused In Coal Scam

The Special Court of Delhi on Thursday convicted all accused in a case concerning alleged irregularities in the allocation of a coal block in Chhattisgarh.

Former Rajya Sabha lawmaker Vijay Darda, his son Devender Darda, ex-Coal Secretary HC Gupta, senior public servants KS Kropha and KC Samria, M/s JLD Yavatmal Energy Pvt Ltd, and its Director Manoj Kumar Jayaswal were all convicted by Special Judge Sanjay Bansal.

The Court found them guilty under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code and the relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

However, the Court acquitted the accused under 409 IPC.

The Court fixed July 18 for arguments to announce the quantum of punishment.

The Central Bureau of Investigation earlier stated that JLD Yavatmal Energy Limited obtained the Fatehpur East Coal Block in Chhattisgarh through a purported criminal conspiracy involving misrepresenting eligibility conditions.

This conviction marks the 13th in Coal Scam-related cases.

The prosecution was led by Senior Advocate RS Cheema, along with AP Singh, Deputy Legal Advisor, and others.

The CBI registered coal-related cases to investigate allegations of obtaining coal blocks through public servants’ misrepresentation, false claims, and collusion or negligence.
