The Supreme Court and its registry will be closed on Friday, April 14th, in observance of Dr. BR Ambedkar’s birth anniversary.
A circular to this effect was issued on Tuesday by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud.
Previously, a group of Apex Court lawyers had written to the CJI requesting that Ambedkar Jayanti be declared an official holiday for the apex court.
The lawyers had pointed out that the Supreme Court, while publishing its list of holidays as part of the annual calendar, fails to include April 14 as a holiday.
CJI Chandrachud paid his respects to Dr Ambedkar on his death anniversary last year, describing him as the architect of the Indian Constitution.
“Personally, I hold Dr. Ambedkar, the architect of our Constitution, in the highest regard. His vision is responsible for everything we are today,” he stated.
