Telangana Medical Student Suicide: Police Files Chargesheet Before SC-ST Court

The Telangana Police have filed a chargesheet recently before a special SC/ST court in connection with the suicide of a female medical postgraduate student that occurred in February 2023.

According to Police Commissioner AV Ranganath, a comprehensive chargesheet consisting of 970 pages was presented before the Court.

The accused, Dr. M. A. Saif, aged 27, worked as a doctor in the Department of Anaesthesia at Kakatiya Medical College in Warangal. He is charged with instigating the victim, who was his junior at the same institution, to take the extreme step that tragically led to her demise on February 22nd.

During the investigation conducted by the Matwada police station in the district, a case was registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Section 4(5) of the Telangana Prohibition of Ragging Act, and relevant provisions of the Schedule Caste/Schedule Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, as mentioned by Ranganath. Warangal Assistant Commissioner of Police, Bonala Kishan, who led the probe, meticulously examined 70 witnesses and gathered evidence from diverse sources, including input from scientific, medical, and forensic experts. This extensive examination of evidence established Dr. Saif as the accused involved in the suicide.

Throughout the inquiry, the police also scrutinized the mobile phones of both the accused and the deceased doctor as part of the investigation process.

Following alleged harassment by her senior at the same college, the first-year postgraduate student reportedly made a suicide attempt on February 22 at the state-run hospital in Warangal district.

Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries and passed away on February 26 while receiving treatment at the state-run NIMS hospital in Hyderabad. The senior student, identified as a male doctor, was subsequently arrested on February 24. However, in April, the accused was granted bail in the case.
