A Special Court for CBI cases on Monday transferred the Gutka scam case, involving several former AIADMK ministers, to a court that handles cases against MPs and MLAs.
Additional Sessions Judge Ezhil Valavan transferred the case, which names former ministers C Vijayabaskar and B V Ramana among the accused, to the Special Court.
The Gutka scam surfaced in 2017 following a surprise raid by city police on a warehouse in Chennai’s suburbs, revealing the illegal stocking and sale of contraband. The investigation was subsequently taken over by the CBI.
The central agency has charged former Health Minister Vijayabaskar, former Commercial Taxes Minister Ramana, retired IPS officials T K Rajendran, S George, and 17 others in connection with the case. The CBI filed its first chargesheet in 2018, initially naming six accused, and later filed additional chargesheets against more than 20 individuals.
