S. Megala, the wife of Tamil Nadu Minister V. Senthil Balaji, has recently filed a habeas corpus plea before the Madras High Court, seeking relief from her husband’s arrest in a money laundering case by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Senior Advocate NR Elango appeared before the bench of Justices M Sundar & R Sakthivel, stating that the arrest was carried out without prior notice or summons.
The bench directed the petitioner to obtain a case number and return at 1.30 pm.
The action came following the Supreme Court’s ruling on May 16.
The minister was arrested following a thorough questioning session conducted by the ED, which commenced on Tuesday.
The charges against him relate to his tenure as the transport minister during the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government from 2011 – 2015.
This arrest comes as a result of a Supreme Court ruling on May 16. The apex court overturned a decision by the Madras High Court, which had ordered a fresh investigation into the cash-for-jobs scam case by the state police.
Moreover, the Supreme Court granted permission to the ED to proceed with its own investigation.
