The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday has assured the Supreme Court that it would refrain from taking any action regarding demolition notices issued against buildings belonging to individuals allegedly involved in October 13 violence in Bahraich.
The case is set to be heard by a bench consisting of Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K.V. Viswanathan.
Advocate C.U. Singh has filed petitions challenging the government’s bulldozer actions targeting the homes of those accused of criminal activities. During the proceedings, the government confirmed that all affected parties received a 15-day notice to respond.
Singh highlighted that following the Bahraich incident, 3 individuals received demolition notices with only 3 days to react. He noted that the notice, issued on October 17, was only posted on the evening of October 18.
Singh expressed concern over the lack of a hearing on a requested Sunday, stating that some individuals have already approached the High Court regarding the matter.
Justice Gavai raised a critical point, questioning how the court could intervene if the constructions in question were obstructing public roads. He subsequently asked Additional Solicitor General K.M. Natarajan, representing the Uttar Pradesh government, to ensure that no actions were taken until tomorrow.
The Supreme Court will reconvene to hear the case, addressing the residents’ concerns about the demolition notices issued in the wake of the communal violence in Bahraich.
