Vijaya Bharathi Sayani Appointed as Acting Chairperson of NHRC

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued a notification on Monday regarding the appointment of an acting chairperson for the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). According to the notification, Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, a member of the NHRC, has been authorized to act as the Chairperson of the NHRC.
The notification states that the President, under Section 7(1) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, is pleased to authorize Vijaya Bharathi Sayani to act as the Chairperson of the NHRC, effective from June 2, 2024, until a new Chairperson is appointed to fill the vacancy.
Sayani joined the NHRC as a member on December 28 of last year. The former Chairperson, former Supreme Court Judge Justice Arun Kumar Mishra, retired on June 1. Justice Mishra had been appointed as the NHRC Chairperson on
