West Bengal Assembly Seeks Review Of New Criminal Laws

In a notable development, West Bengal Law Minister Moloy Ghatak and other legislators presented a resolution in the state Assembly, calling on the Centre to reconsider three new criminal laws.

Opposition BJP members argued that these laws were adopted after extensive consultations with various societal sectors and accused the resolution’s backers of pursuing political agendas.

The new criminal laws, which took effect on July 1, replaced the Indian Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code, and Indian Evidence Act. Speaker Biman Banerjee announced that the discussion on the resolution will continue on Thursday.
