1984 Anti-Sikh Riots Case: CBI Files Reply In Delhi Court On Plea Of Jagdish Tytler

The Central Bureau of Investigation has recently filed its reply before a Delhi court on the application of senior Congress leader Jagdish Tytler seeking court records from the year 1984 till 2023.

Tytler is accused in the Pul Bangash massacre during the anti-Sikh riots in 1984. The court has scheduled the case for hearing on September 6.

Earlier on August 11, in view of security concerns related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, Jagdish Tytler appeared before the Rouse Avenue Court through video conferencing (VC). On August 5, during a hearing, members of the Sikh community staged a strong protest against Jagdish Tytler. Subsequently, he requested permission to appear through VC, which was granted.

Previously, on August 4, the Session Court granted interim bail to Jagdish Tytler after hearing his bail application. The CBI filed a supplementary chargesheet on May 20. This case is linked to the killing of 3 individuals in the Pul Bangash area on November 1, 1984.

The Central Bureau of Investigation registered a case against Jagdish Tytler on October 31, 1984, related to his alleged involvement in the anti-Sikh riots following the assassination of the then Prime Minister. The case pertained to the 1984 Sikh riots, and Tytler was named as an accused in the charge sheet filed on May 20.

Justice Nanavati Commission of Inquiry was set up in the year 2000 by the Government of India to enquire into the incidents of anti-Sikh riots of the year 1984 in Delhi.

During the CBI investigation, evidence from records emerged that Jagdish Tytler allegedly instigated and provoked the crowd gathered at the Gurudwara Pul Bangash in Delhi’s Azad Market on November 1, 1984. This led to violence including the burning and looting of Sikh-owned shops, as well as the killing of three individuals by the mob.
