Delhi’s Karkardooma Court has sought a response from the Delhi Police on the bail plea filed by former JNU student Umar Khalid, who stands accused in the purported larger conspiracy behind the 2020 northeast Delhi riots. Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai presided over Khalid’s fresh application for regular bail. Khalid faces charges under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Protection) Act (UAPA).
“The prosecution has already received a copy of the bail application along with the documents. The prosecution is directed to file a reply to the current bail application on the next date, providing an advance copy to the counsel for the applicant or accused (Khalid),” stated the court.
The next hearing for filing the reply and arguments on the bail application is scheduled for March 11, 2024.
A total of twenty individuals, including activists Sharjeel Imam, Khalid Saifi, and former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain, have been implicated for their purported involvement in the larger conspiracy to instigate the communal riots. The case falls under the investigation purview of the Special Cell of the Delhi Police.
