2020 Murder Case: Delhi Court Convicts Man

2020 Murder Case

A Delhi court has convicted Sanjay Singh for the murder of Amit, which occurred in a fit of rage on February 29, 2020.

The Additional Sessions Judge, Vijay Shankar, determined that the prosecution established Singh’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt through a compelling “chain” of circumstantial evidence.

During the trial, Additional Public Prosecutor Chander Kirti Negi presented the case, stating that Singh and Amit had consumed alcohol together. When Amit demanded money for the liquor, Singh fatally attacked him.

The court noted in its September 30 order that both Amit’s body and the murder weapon, a brick were discovered in Singh’s tenanted room. The judge highlighted that Singh failed to explain how both the body and the brick came to be in his possession, as well as the circumstances surrounding Amit’s death.

Amit’s widow testified that her husband was last seen with Singh, adding weight to the prosecution’s case. The court found the landlord’s testimony, in which Singh allegedly confessed to the murder, to be credible and reliable.

The court concluded that the prosecution did not need to prove a specific motive for the murder, as the evidence clearly established Singh’s guilt. The testimonies of the widow and the landlord were corroborated by additional witnesses, including police and medical experts, along with forensic evidence.

Judge Shankar emphasized, “There is an unbroken chain of circumstantial evidence,” asserting that each aspect of the evidence clearly indicated the accused’s guilt.

Arguments regarding sentencing are scheduled for October 24.
