CJI Chandrachud

The Chief Justice of India (CJI), DY Chandrachud, stated on Tuesday that the Supreme Court’s vacation benches will hear around 300 new cases during the summer break, a departure from the court’s usual practice of hearing only urgent matters.

A bench comprising CJI DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha said the same in open court.

“Vacation judges have agreed that fresh matters can be listed before vacation benches. There are 300 fresh matters in vacation. Also hybrid hearings will be possible so that if somebody wants to go to a more convenient place can argue,” the CJI remarked.

“Only requirement is be well dressed,” Justice Narasimha added in lighter vein.

Vacation benches typically hear matters that require immediate hearing, and new cases are heard only if immediate relief is required or if the concerned bench agrees to hear them.

The Supreme Court notified earlier this month that the vacation benches that will hear cases during the top court’s upcoming summer vacation, which occurs from May 22 to July 3, 2023.
