Advocate Babar Qadri Murder: Ex-J&K HCBA President Remanded to Police Custody

A special court in Jammu has remanded Mian Abdul Qayoom, the former president of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association’s Srinagar wing, in police custody till July 1. He is being held in connection with the murder case of advocate Babar Qadri in 2020.

On Tuesday (June 25), Qayoom was taken into custody on suspicion of conspiring to kill Babar Qadri.
Mian Abdul Qayoom, a well-known figure in Kashmir connected to the All Party Hurriyat Conference and the outlawed Jamaat-e-Islami, was placed under arrest following the gathering of evidence against him by the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s State Investigation Agency (SIA).

In July 2023, the SIA assumed control of the murder investigation.
In September 2020, Qadri, a human rights specialist who frequently participated in debates on television, was shot and killed at his home in the downtown Hawal neighborhood. In 2018, he had narrowly survived an assassination attempt.
