Anna University
In a major development in the Anna University sexual abuse case, the Chennai Mahila Court on Wednesday convicted Gananesekaran on all eleven charges filed against him.
The verdict marks the conclusion of a high-profile case that drew widespread public and political attention.
The case dates back to December, when a second-year student of Anna University filed a police complaint stating that she was threatened and sexually assaulted by an unidentified man while speaking with a friend on campus.
Following the investigation, Chennai Police arrested Gananesekaran in connection with the assault.
The court found the accused guilty after evaluating the evidence and testimonies, bringing some closure to a case that had ignited student protests and raised questions about campus safety.
Reacting to the court’s ruling, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami said:
“The court has given its verdict today in the sexual abuse case. In this case, the AIADMK protested against the incident, and the voices of the students were heard. As a result of the following and a series of investigations, criminal charges were filed against the accused. The decision given by the court on the basis of documents is welcome.”
The AIADMK had taken a strong stance following the incident, supporting student demonstrations and demanding swift justice.
Earlier, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin assured the assembly and the public that the state government would support the victim and ensure justice is served. Highlighting the prompt action taken by the police, Stalin stated:
“Members have spoken here by mentioning one University’s name. But I don’t want to mention that name, and don’t want to defame that name. Because he only made us all. With that emotion, I am leaving aside that name. No one can accept what happened to a student in Chennai. Sexual assault on a student is cruel.”
Stalin underlined the emotional and symbolic value of the university to Tamil Nadu, choosing to avoid naming it directly while still addressing the gravity of the incident.
Despite the swift arrest, opposition parties accused the DMK government of being slow to act initially and not taking the matter seriously enough. The case became a flashpoint in state politics, with several parties pressing for greater accountability and reforms to ensure campus safety.
What Lies Ahead
With the conviction of Gananesekaran, attention now turns to sentencing and any potential appeals. The verdict has been welcomed across party lines as a necessary step towards justice for the survivor.
The case continues to spark discussions on women’s safety in educational institutions and the need for more proactive preventive measures.
