Anti-Sikh Riots Case: Delhi Court to Decide on Framing Charges Against Jagdish Tytler

Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court is expected to deliver its order on August 16 regarding whether to frame charges against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler. The case pertains to the alleged killing of three individuals in front of the Pul Bangash Gurudwara during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The order, initially scheduled for Friday, was postponed as Special CBI Judge Rakesh Siyal was on leave. The judge had reserved the order after hearing arguments from both the CBI and the defense.

According to a witness statement in the charge sheet, Tytler exited a white ambassador car in front of the Gurudwara on November 1, 1984, and incited the mob by saying, “Kill the Sikhs, they have killed our mother,” which led to the murder of three persons.

In August 2023, a sessions court had granted Tytler anticipatory bail in the case on a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh and a surety of the same amount. The court also imposed conditions on Tytler, including that he must not tamper with the evidence or leave the country without its permission. The agency has invoked charges under sections 147 (rioting), 109 (abetment) read with 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), among others, against Tytler.
