No lawyer has appeared for Hindu monk Chinmoy Das during his bail hearing, as per reports.
The Bangladesh court has postponed the case, and put the matter for hearing on January 6 next year.
International Society for Krishna Consciousness Kolkata spokesperson Radharamn Das shared a photo on social media platform X of a hospitalized lawyer identified as Ramen Roy.
The tweet reads: ‘His only ‘fault’ was defending Chinmoy Krishna Prabhu in court.’
Senior Advocates at the Supreme Court of India condemned the alleged brutal attack on lawyers in Bangladesh.
Senior Advocate Mahalakshmi Pavani strongly condemned the alleged assault on lawyer Ramen Roy.
She questioned why he was being targeted, emphasizing that he was merely representing his client. She noted that this incident reflects the current state of affairs in Bangladesh.
Ms Pavani said that everyone has the right to a fair defense in a civilized society. She pointed out that in India, even Ajmal Kasab was given a fair trial, as were the accused in the Nirbhaya case.
Ms Pavani urged politicians not to play the religion card, but to focus on uniting the people in the name of humanity.
Supreme Court advocate A.P. Singh, who also represented the accused in the famous Nirbhaya case, said: ‘While India is celebrating Advocate’s Day, news has emerged from Bangladesh about an attack on a lawyer of Bangladesh’s Hindu monk Chinmoy Das, this demands strong condemnation.’
He said: ‘Are even lawyers in Bangladesh no longer safe?’
He further said: ‘I urge both the United Nations and the Government of India to take firm action against these attacks. The safety of lawyers must be a top priority for the Bangladesh government. If necessary, we will take this matter to the International Court of Justice.’
He said that on one hand India aspires to be the ‘Vishwaguru’, our government must consider how we are supporting the Hindu minority population in Bangladesh.
He further added that the Bangladesh which is India’s closest neighbour and younger brother, was facing grave concerns regarding the atrocities being committed against its Hindu minority community.
He urged both the United Nations and the Government of India to take firm action against these attacks.
Conclusion
The safety of lawyers must be a top priority for the Bangladesh government.
Lawyers are the torch bearers of the society, and if they are not safe then what to say about the Hindu Minority population in Bangladesh.
