Big Setback To Mamata Govt! Calcutta HC Orders NIA Probe Into West Bengal Ram Navami Violence

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered National Investigation Agency (NIA) investigation into this year’s West Bengal Ram Navami violence.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam directed West Bengal Police to hand over all relevant investigation records and documents to the NIA within two weeks.

The order was passed in response to a PIL filed by BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari seeking an NIA probe into the Ram Navami violence in West Bengal.

Previously, the fact-finding committee’s interim report to the court revealed that the acts of violence in Howrah, Hooghly, and Rishra, among other places of West Bengal, were pre-planned.

“The riots were pre-planned, orchestrated, and instigated,” according to the initial findings of the Fact-Finding Committee, which is chaired by Justice L Narasimha Reddy (Retd).

The BJP had also questioned the administrative capabilities of the state government led by Mamata Banerjee.

Previously, the MHA had sought a comprehensive report from the West Bengal government last week on the violence that erupted between two groups during a Ram Navami procession in Howrah.
