Calcutta HC Grants Interim Protection To Secular Front MLA In Rape Case

The Calcutta High Court has recently granted interim protection to Naushad Siddiqui, the lone MLA of the Indian Secular Front in West Bengal, in a rape case filed against him.

The court has ordered the Kolkata Police not to take any action against Siddiqui until the next hearing on July 18.

According to the woman who filed the case, Siddiqui allegedly “wrongfully restrained” her at his office in Kolkata one and a half years ago and engaged in sexual relations with her on the promise of marriage.

She claimed that Siddiqui maintained a physically intimate relationship with her under the pretext of marriage.

Siddiqui sought anticipatory bail in the case from the Calcutta High Court, denying all allegations and asserting that they were part of a political vendetta set up by TMC leader Sabyasachi Dutta.

Dutta accompanied the woman to the police station when she lodged the complaint against Siddiqui.

Siddiqui is the elected representative of the Bhangar assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas.
