The Central government today has notified the appointment of 2 lawyers and one judicial officer as judges of the Uttarakhand High Court.
Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted the news today. The following are the 3 persons cleared for appointment are Rakesh Thapliyal; Pankaj Purohit; and Vivek Bharti Sharma (judicial officer).
The 3 names, along with that of advocate Subhash Upadhyay, had been recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium for elevation previously in this month.
This was after the Chief Justice of the High Court of Uttarakhand had in September forwarded a proposal in this regard in consultation with his 2 senior-most colleagues. The Chief Minister and the Governor of the State of Uttarakhand, and the Union Department of Justice subsequently concurred with the recommendations.
The Uttarakhand High Court on April 1 has a sanctioned strength of 11 judges is functioning with 5 judges, a vacancy position of 6.
