The Central Government has recently notified the appointment of Senior Advocate Harpreet Singh Brar to the Punjab and Haryana High Court as an Additional Judge.
On March 22, the Supreme Court Collegium reiterated the request for his appointment as a High Court judge.
The Supreme Court collegium had previously proposed his name for elevation on July 25, 2022; however, he was unable to be nominated after the Department of Justice raised concerns and returned the proposal in November 2022.
Nevertheless, after seeking fresh information from the High Court collegium on the points raised by the Centre, the Supreme Court collegium reiterated his name.
The Supreme Court collegium also considered the views of two more consultee judges who were recently nominated to the Supreme Court.
“After considering all relevant factors, the Collegium concludes that Shri Harpreet Singh Brar is fit and suitable for appointment as a Judge of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana,” the Collegium stated, which included Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, and Justice KM Joseph.
When reiterating the proposal, the Supreme Court Collegium stated that it should be processed as soon as possible.
