Centre Appoints AG Sharma To Manipur High Court, 5 More Judges To Be Appointed Soon

Central government notified the appointment of judicial officer Aribam Guneshwar Sharma as judge of Manipur High Court, while 5 judges will be appointed to the apex court soon.

The Union government on Friday assured the Supreme Court that the collegium’s recommendations for the appointment of five judges will be cleared soon.

The Supreme Court, which was hearing a matter related to the Centre’s alleged delay in clearing names recommended by the collegium, has posted it for further hearing on February 13.

Attorney General R. Venkataramani told a bench of Justice SK Kaul and Justice AS Oka that the warrant for appointment of these five names is expected to be issued soon.

The Supreme Court, which was hearing a matter related to the Centre’s alleged delay in clearing names recommended by the collegium, has posted it for further hearing on February 13.

The bench stated that “it is a very, very severe matter” regarding the Centre’s delay in approving recommendations for the transfer of high court justices.

“Don’t make us take a stand, which will be very uncomfortable,” the bench remarked.

The collegium had in December 2022 recommended the names of three high court chief justices and two judges for elevation to the Supreme Court. These were Rajasthan High Court Chief Justice Pankaj Mithal, Patna High Court Chief Justice Sanjay Karol, Manipur High Court Chief Justice PV Sanjay Kumar, Patna High Court judge Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Allahabad High Court judge Manoj Misra.

The top court has a sanctioned strength of 34 members, including Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.
