Centre Approved Renaming Osnamabad To Dharashiv, Decision On Aurangabad Still Under Process

The Union government recently informed the Bombay High Court that it had already approved the renaming of Osmanabad to Dharashiv, while the renaming of Aurangabad to Shambhaji Nagar was still under process.

For Osmanabad, the renaming approval was done by the Centre on February 2.

ASG Anil Singh told the bench comprised of Acting Chief Justice SV Gangapurwala and Justice Sandeep Marne that, “As far as Osmanabad is concerned, we have already notified the state that there was no objection to name change, but there is no decision yet on the name change of Aurangabad, it is still in process.”

The court accepted the statement and listed the matter for further hearing on February 27.

Last year, the Maharashtra cabinet of CM Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis approved renaming Aurangabad to Sambhaji Nagar and Osmanabad to Dharashiv. The two-member cabinet passed the Government Resolution for the two-name changes on July 16, 2022, and it was forwarded to the Central government.
