Centre Notifies Appointment Of Justice Nitin Jamdar As Bombay HC Acting Chief Justice

The Central Government on Tuesday appointed Justice Nitin Jamdar as acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

Justice Jamdar is set to assume the post on May 31, following the retirement of the current Chief Justice RD Dhanuka.

The Department of Justice website has issued a notification to this effect.

“In exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint, Justice Nitin Madhukar Jamdar, Judge of Bombay High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from May 31, 2023 consequent upon the retirement of Justice Ramesh Deokinandan Dhanuka, Chief Justice, Bombay High Court on May 30, 2023,” the notification reads.

Justice Jamdar hails from a lineage of lawyers and was born in Solapur. He is the third generation in his family to pursue a career in the legal domain. His educational journey took him through various schools across Maharashtra. Eventually, he earned degrees in Commerce and Law from Sydenham Commerce College and Government Law College in Mumbai.

Following his education, he embarked on his legal practice at the Bombay High Court, specializing primarily in administrative and constitutional law. During his career, he had the privilege of representing a wide range of public bodies, including the Zilla Parishads, Municipal Councils, Municipal Corporations, Universities, Bar Council of India, and High Court administration. Additionally, he held the esteemed position of senior standing counsel for the Union of India.

In recognition of his expertise and contributions, Justice Jamdar was elevated to the position of judge at the Bombay High Court on January 23, 2012.
