The Central government on Thursday announced the appointment of Justice TS Sivagnanam as Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, effective from March 31,2023.
Justice Sivagnanam will succeed present Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava after his retirement.
Surprisingly, on February 9, the Supreme Court Collegium appointed Justice Sivagnanam as Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, rather than Acting Chief Justice.
The Collegium highlighted in its resolution that the Madras High Court, Justice Sivagnanam’s parent High Court, has only one Chief Justice of a High Court – Justice S Manikumar of the Kerala High Court.
Considering that the consultee judges had approved the Collegium’s recommendation to suggest Justice Sivagnanam’s name, the resolution went on to say,
“Apart from this, the period which has been served by Mr Justice T S Sivagnanam as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court would provide useful experience in his work as the Chief Justice of that High Court.”
Justice Sivagnanam earned his bachelor’s degree degree in science from Loyola College in Chennai. In September 1986, he was enrolled to the Tamil Nadu Bar Council. In March 2009, he was appointed as an additional judge of the Madras High Court, and he was designated a permanent judge two years later. He was transferred to the Calcutta High Court after more than a decade, where he was sworn in on October 25, 2021.
