CJI DY Chandrachud Launched ‘Neutral Citations’ For All The Judgements of Supreme Court- Another Milestone

The bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud in the case observed and has announced that all the judgements of the Supreme Court will be having a ‘neutral citations’, wherein announcing a new initiative.
The bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud stated that our recent initiative being the neutral citations for all the Supreme Court judgements. It has been stated by CJI that first tranch will be till 01.01.2023, then the other tranch will be till the judgements from 2014 and then finally the court will go back to 1950, so that all the Supreme Court judgements will now be having a neutral citation.
It has also been expressed by the bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud his aspirations that it has also been followed by the High Court the neutral citations for their judgements. Presently, the High Court of Delhi, Madras and Kerela have introduced neutral citation for the judgements of Supreme Court.
It has also been discussed by the Chief Justice the other initiatives such as the eSCR and translation of the judgements in the said local languages.
It has been stated by CJI DY Chandrachud that we are also translating the Judgements of Supreme Court in all languages and the court is using machine learning tools and that is being verified by the district judge team. 2900 supreme court judgments are being translated so far and sometimes the transactions can be difficult. If it is said that “leave granted”, it may literally be translated to “avakash prapt ho gaya” so there being a team of district judges and law researchers assisting. The Supreme Court will fund it all.
CJI DY Chandrachud, who being the chairperson of Supreme Court’s eCommittee in 2022 had constituted the a panel of three high court judges to prepare a framework for formulating the neutral citations for citing the decisions of the high courts as well as that of the apex court.
The bench headed by Justice Rajiv Shakdher of Delhi High Court, Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan V of the Kerala High Court and Justice Suraj Govind Raj of the Karnataka High Court in the case observed and has announced to be members of the committee, and had been asked to suggest modalities and for submitting a report to the eCommittee. Ramesh Babu, who being the Member (Project Management), eCommittee, The Supreme Court was being announced to be the convenor of the committee.
However, the neutral Citations are to ensure a uniform pattern for citing of all decisions of the High Court and of the Supreme Court. Therefore, the Kerala High Court and the Delhi High Court recently introduced their own neutral citations.
