‘Commendable’: Meghalaya HC Praises State Govt’s Initiative To Ease Traffic Congestion

Meghalaya HC

The Meghalaya High Court has recently praised the State government’s initiative to procure a large number of buses for ferrying school children in an effort to reduce the number of cars on road.

A division bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice W. Diengdoh remarked while perusing the status report filed in the PIL moved by one Philip Khrawbok Shati.

The most commendable aspect of the matter is the short time within which an initiative has been taken,” the bench stated.

The bench observed that despite school buses being available, parents or guardians of wards may still continue to use their private vehicles for security reasons. However, it was informed that to allay the fears of concerned parents, CCTVs have been installed in the buses, and an App has been or will be distributed to the parents, allowing them to track the location of the buses and what is going on inside them in real time.

It is almost revolutionary, said the bench, adding that the state should work on other measures to alleviate traffic congestion in the capital city, such as building roads, parking lots, one-way streets, or other forms of regulation.

“The State should continue the good effort in such regard,” it added, and scheduled the matter for further consideration on 7th July, 2023.
