Contempt of Court: Delhi HC Discharges Ex-DHCBA President in 2006 Tis Hazari Violence Case

2006 Tis Hazari Violence

The Delhi High Court on Friday  discharged approximately twelve lawyers, including former Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) President Rajiv Khosla, in connection with a criminal contempt of court case linked to the 2006 violence and ransacking at the Tis Hazari court. Former Delhi Bar Association (DBA) President Sanjeev Nasiar was also discharged in the same case.

The order was pronounced by a bench comprising Justice Siddharth Mridul, Justice Rajnish Bhatnagar, and Justice Anoop Kumar Mendiratta. The order was reserved on October 14, 2022, and a detailed copy of the order is awaited.

The violence erupted when lawyers were protesting the relocation of some courts from Tis Hazari to Rohini. The protests escalated, leading to lawyers hurling chairs, breaking computers, and damaging court records in over two dozen courtrooms.

Following the incident, a full court of the Delhi High Court took cognizance of the report filed by the then District Judge SN Dhingra and ordered strict action against the lawyers involved. Subsequently, the court-initiated contempt of court proceedings against a total of 25 lawyers. However, 13 of them had been discharged earlier.
