The Surat Sessions Court in Gujarat awarded Rahul Gandhi bail on Monday in the defamation case stemming from his remark “why all thieves share the Modi surname” during a political campaign in Karol in April 2019.
The matter is listed for further consideration on April 13, 2023.
Earlier today, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi moved an appeal challenging his conviction in the Surat Sessions Court. The appeal was supported by two applications, the first for Suspension of Sentence, which is basically an application for regular bail, and the second for Suspension of Conviction.
If the second application is granted, his Lok Sabha membership will be restored, subject to the issuance of notification of the LS Secretariat in this regard.
On March 23, the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate sentenced Gandhi to two years in prison, after which he was disqualified as a Lok Sabha MP. His sentence, however, was suspended, and he was also given bail, allowing him to file an appeal against his conviction within 30 days.
