Delhi Coaching Centre Drowning: Court Sends All Accused In Judicial Custody Till Sep 18

Coaching Centre Death

Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court on Wednesday ordered that all 6 individuals accused in the Rajinder Nagar coaching centre drowning case be held in judicial custody until September 18, 2024.

The case involves the tragic drowning of three UPSC aspirants due to basement flooding at the coaching centre.

The Central Bureau of Investigation presented the accused- Abhishek Gupta, Deshpal Singh, Tajinder Singh, Harvinder Singh, Sarabjit Singh, and Parvinder Singh— after their previous remand period ended. The court earlier granted a 4-day police remand for these individuals, emphasizing that custodial interrogation is crucial for the investigation.

The Supreme Court has upheld the necessity of such interrogation for serious offenses, allowing the Investigation Officer to effectively pursue the case.

Senior Public Prosecutor Prashant Kumar, representing the CBI, argued that further custodial interrogation was essential for the investigation. He noted that the accused had not yet been taken into police custody.

In a related development, the court recently denied a petition from Abhishek Gupta, CEO of Rau’s IAS Study Circle, who sought permission to resume classes at the coaching centre. The petition followed the drowning incident on July 27, with the CBI opposing the request.

The CBI contended that the basement, where the incident occurred, was being misused as a library instead of serving its intended purpose as a storage area.
