A Delhi court has cleared Aam Aadmi Party MP Swati Maliwal of charges that she unlawfully disclosed the identity of a 14-year-old rape victim who later died from her injuries.
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Neha Mittal announced the acquittal, with the full judgment yet to be released.
The case stemmed from 2016, when Maliwal headed the Delhi Commission for Women. She was booked under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, which prohibits revealing the identity of minors subjected to sexual crimes.
Police alleged the victim died on July 23, 2016, after being sexually assaulted by her neighbour, who allegedly forced her to swallow a corrosive substance, causing severe internal damage.
Investigators accused Maliwal of circulating a notice she had sent to the area’s Deputy Commissioner of Police, seeking investigation details. The notice, said to contain the victim’s name, was allegedly shared with print and electronic media, posted in WhatsApp groups, and later aired on TV channels.
