Delhi Court Extends NIA Custody Of 26/11 Accused Tahawwur Rana

Kerala Court
A Delhi court on Monday granted the National Investigation Agency (NIA) a 12-day extension of custody for Tahawwur Rana, a key figure in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, after his initial 18-day custody ended.
Rana, a Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman, was extradited to India on April 10 after the U.S. Supreme Court dismissed his plea against extradition on April 4. He was a close associate of David Coleman Headley, one of the main conspirators behind the attacks.

The court permitted Rana to use only a “soft-tip pen” and meet his lawyer in the presence of NIA officials, who must stay out of hearing distance during discussions.

Details Of The Alleged

The NIA informed the court that Headley had discussed the entire operation with Rana and had updated him about the involvement of Pakistani nationals Ilyas Kashmiri and Abdur Rehman. An email sent by Headley to Rana detailing his belongings and assets was also presented as evidence.

The NIA argued that additional custody was essential to piece together the full extent of the conspiracy, retrace Rana’s movements from 17 years ago, and confront him with critical evidence.

Background

On November 26, 2008, 10 Pakistani terrorists launched a coordinated attack across Mumbai, targeting a railway station, luxury hotels, and a Jewish center, resulting in the deaths of 166 people during a 60-hour siege.
