The Rouse Avenue Court on Wednesday extended the deadline for the Delhi Police to complete its investigation by 11 days, moving the cut-off from April 24 to May 5.
The case involves two key accused—Sahil alias “Poli” and Vijay Gahlaut alias “Kalu”—allegedly linked to an organised crime syndicate led by Kapil Sangwan alias “Nandu.”
Special Judge Jitendra Singh heard the prosecution’s plea, in which ACP Naresh and Special Public Prosecutor sought a full 30-day extension. Noting that the statutory 90-day investigation window was set to expire, the court pressed the police to narrow their request.
The investigation team explained that remaining tasks include confronting suspects with co-accused and collecting vital financial and property records. After considering these submissions, the judge granted the shorter, 11-day extension.
Judicial Custody Maintained
The court also upheld judicial remand for ex-MLA Naresh Balyan and five other suspects—Ritik alias “Peter,” Rohit alias “Anna,” Sachin Chikara, Jyoti Prakash alias “Baba,” along with Sahil and Vijay—until the next hearing. All were produced via video link from various correctional facilities. Attorney Rohit Kumar Dalal appeared for the defence through video conferencing.
Ongoing Proceedings
This probe follows Balyan’s December 4, 2024, arrest in the same MCOCA case. On March 1, the court had already granted a 60-day extension. Charges against Ritik, Rohit, and Sachin have been formally taken on record, with supplementary charges filed and acknowledged for Anna and Chikara.
Meanwhile, Jyoti Prakash—the real brother of the alleged kingpin Kapil Sangwan—was recorded under MCOCA during April custody.
With the new deadline set, investigators must swiftly wrap up evidence gathering to meet the May 5 timeline.
