Delhi Excise Policy: Court Issues Notice to ED on Arvind Kejriwal’s Bail Pleas

Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court on Thursday issued notice to Directorate of Enforcement (ED) on Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s plea seeking regular bail in a money laundering case linked to the alleged excise scam.

The Judge’s Directions

Special Judge Kaveri Baweja directed the central probe agency to submit its response by Saturday. The judge also sought the ED’s response on another plea by Kejriwal, requesting interim bail for a week on medical grounds if the regular bail plea is denied.

The Delhi Chief Minister is currently on interim bail till June 1.

Interim bail Granted

On May 10, the Supreme Court of India granted interim bail to Kejriwal until June 1, for campaigning in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta ruled that the Delhi chief minister will have to surrender and return to jail on June 2, 2024.

However, the court barred Kejriwal from visiting his office or the Delhi secretariat and signing official files unless absolutely necessary for obtaining the lieutenant governor’s approval.

The matter pertains to alleged corruption and money laundering in the formulation and execution of the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22, which has now been scrapped.
