Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court on Monday granted permission to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh to appear before the Privilege Committee of Parliament to submit his representations in matters related to the breach of privilege.
However, the court deferred the cognizance of the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) charge sheet against him in the money laundering case, as the application seeking witness protection is pending before another court.
Special Judge M K Nagpal approved the application presented on behalf of Sanjay Singh after considering the arguments from his counsel.
The court instructed the Jail Superintendent to facilitate his appearance before the Privilege Committee on any working day during the session to file his submissions. The court also specified that if any notice required his personal presence in the proceedings, he would be taken to Parliament.
However, the court imposed restrictions, barring Sanjay Singh from meeting colleagues, supporters, and media persons.
The hearing on Sanjay Singh’s bail application is scheduled for tomorrow at 2 pm, and he is to be produced before the court. The judicial custody is extended until December 21.
Advocates Farrukh Khan and Prakash Priydarshi represented Sanjay Singh in court. Farrukh Khan, Singh’s counsel, informed the court that he was directed by the committee to appear on October 5 but was arrested on October 4, 2023. Despite a reminder sent on November 17, 2023, through jail authorities, Singh was unable to comply.
Singh stated that he is required to appear personally before the committee in four ongoing proceedings related to the breach of privilege. The counsel emphasized that Singh recently received a notice served through jail authorities, along with a letter written to the accused.
On December 2, 2023, the Enforcement Directorate filed a charge sheet against Singh for alleged money laundering offenses. Singh, who was arrested on October 4, 2023, awaits a decision on his bail application from the court.
