The Delhi High Court on Wednesday ordered Twitter to provide basic subscriber information and other essential details of five accounts involved in leaking scenes from the upcoming film ‘Jawan’.
The film, which stars Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, will be released on 7 September, 2023.
Justice C Hari Shankar denied the application filed by Red Chillies Entertainments Private Limited in its suit filed against different rogue websites and other social media platforms seeking to prevent them from violating its copyright in the film.
During today’s hearing, the entertainment company’s lawyer stated that the new application was filed in light of additional leaks committed by the Twitter accounts in question.
The nature of the leaks, according to the counsel, revealed that the people running the Twitter accounts had “accessed systems” of the plaintiff company.
The application thus requested that Twitter disclose the basic subscriber information as well as other details such as IP addresses, usernames, and phone numbers for the five Twitter accounts.
Disposing of the application, the Court ordered, “Thus, the Court directs Twitter to provide information of five accounts by way of an affidavit as an additional document with advanced copy to the plaintiff’s counsel so that the plaintiff can take appropriate action.”
It was the case of entertainment company that the defendants were indulging in broadcasting specific snippets and stills from the film that were available on the internet despite the fact that no license to broadcast or transmit them had been granted to them till date.
In issuing summons in the suit, Justice Shankar had ordered Twitter, YouTube, Google, and Reddit to immediately block and remove all infringing content and videos referred to in the plaint by Red Chillies Entertainment.
It further added that if similar content is uploaded on the internet, the entertainment firm will be free to immediately inform internet service providers, who will instantly remove or block access to it.
