Disproportionate Assets Case: Mohali Court Extends Majithia’s Custody By 4 Days

A Mohali court on Wednesday extended the custodial remand of Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia by 4 days in a case involving alleged disproportionate assets linked to ₹540 crore in drug money.

Majithia was brought to the Mohali district court complex under heavy security after completing a seven-day remand in the custody of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau. Following a nearly three-hour hearing, Public Prosecutor Ferry Sofat confirmed that the court approved the VB’s request for a further extension of remand.

Linked To Ongoing 2021 Drug Probe

Majithia was arrested on June 25 in connection with an FIR registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act, stemming from a wider investigation by a Punjab Police special investigation team into a 2021 drug trafficking case. The case is based on findings from a 2018 report prepared by the state’s anti-drug Special Task Force (STF).

Notably, Majithia had already faced arrest in the 2021 NDPS case and spent over five months in Patiala jail before being granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in August 2022.

Majithia Alleges Political Vendetta

A day prior to the remand extension, Majithia approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court challenging the fresh disproportionate assets FIR. In his plea, he termed the action as “political witch-hunting” allegedly triggered by his criticism of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.

Filed through his counsels Arshdeep Singh Cheema and Sartej Singh Narula, the petition argued that the arrest and remand were unlawful and politically motivated.

“The FIR is a result of political vendetta, initiated by the current government to target and harass a vocal political opponent,” the plea stated.

The matter continues to draw political and legal attention as Majithia prepares to contest the charges and seeks relief from the High Court.
