A court in Odisha’s Cuttack district issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against actor-turned-Lok Sabha MP Anubhav Mohanty in connection with a four-year-old domestic violence case filed against him by his now-divorced wife.
The warrant was issued by the judicial magistrate’s court after Mohanty failed to appear before it for the second time. The court has instructed the police to execute the NBW by May 23.
Last December, the Orissa High Court granted Mohanty a divorce from his wife Varsha Priyadarshini.
Mohanty, who was previously the Kendrapara MP of BJD, joined the BJP on April 1.
The court had initially scheduled May 10 for framing charges against Mohanty, but upon his request for additional time citing personal reasons, the court extended the deadline to May 13. However, Mohanty did not appear on the scheduled date.
In December 2020, Priyadarshini filed a complaint with the police, alleging that Mohanty and two of his aides had confined her to a room in his parental house in the city.
Subsequently, the police rescued her, and based on her complaint, a case was registered against the MP under various sections of the IPC and the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act of 2005.
