Drug Trafficking: Assam Court Grants 20 Yrs Of Rigorous Imprisonment To 3 Individuals

A special court in Assam’s Nagaon district has sentenced three individuals to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for their involvement in a major drug trafficking operation.

The convicts—Habil Ali, Foridur Rahman alias Mamu, and Prafulla Dutta—were found guilty under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Massive Seizure Uncovered in 2020 Operation

The case dates back to December 2020, when police arrested Habil Ali from his residence. A major breakthrough followed as officers seized a large quantity of heroin, cannabis, and over ₹10 lakh in cash during the raid. Subsequent investigation linked the trio to a wider interstate drug trafficking network.

State Crackdown on Drug Syndicates Intensifies

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the verdict, calling it a strong message to those involved in drug-related crimes. The sentencing is part of the state’s larger war on drugs, which has seen significant seizures and thousands of arrests. Since the anti-drug campaign began, Assam Police have seized narcotics worth over ₹1,430 crore and arrested over 9,300 suspects.

Legal experts say the sentencing sends a clear warning about the state’s zero-tolerance stance on drug trafficking. Law enforcement agencies have vowed to continue dismantling drug networks and pursuing strict legal actions to curb the drug menace in the region.
