A CBI court in Visakhapatnam sentenced three former postal officers to five years of imprisonment in an embezzlement case on Thursday and imposed fines on them.

The Additional Special Judge Court for CBI Cases convicted Kodamachili Rajendra Prasad, then Sub-Post Master, and I Satyanarayana and P Appalaswamy, both former Postal Assistants at the Yeleswaram Sub-Post Office in East Godavari District. The fines imposed were Rs. 7,000, Rs. 8,29,000, and Rs. 8,59,000 respectively.

Following the judgement, the convicts were sent to Central Prison, Visakhapatnam.

The CBI had registered the case on March 28, 2013. It was alleged that Prasad, in collusion with Satyanarayana and Appalaswamy, conspired to defraud the Postal Department and depositors. They misappropriated Rs. 30,56,429 from 153 Recurring Deposit accounts under the Mahila Pradhan Kshetriya Bachat Yojana (MPKBY) scheme between October 21, 2009, and September 29, 2012, causing a significant loss to the Postal Department and the depositors.

The CBI filed the chargesheet against the accused on April 25, 2014. After the trial, the court found the accused guilty and sentenced them. The conviction resulted from a thorough investigation and effective prosecution by the CBI, which presented credible evidence upheld by the Trial Court.
