The Delhi court on Tuesday has extended judicial custody of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal until September 3 in the ongoing excise policy case.
Kejriwal appeared before a Delhi court via video conferencing on Tuesday, where the extension was ordered in the Central Bureau of Investigation case against him.
Kejriwal was initially arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 in a money laundering case related to the excise policy. Although he was granted bail by the trial court on June 20, the Delhi High Court overturned this decision the next day. Kejriwal then appealed to the Supreme Court on June 22 against the High Court’s order.
On June 26, the CBI arrested Kejriwal in connection with the excise policy case. He was later granted bail by the Supreme Court on July 11 in the money laundering case filed by the ED.
Kejriwal has since filed petitions in the Supreme Court seeking bail and challenging his arrest by the CBI. The Supreme Court is set to hear the matter on September 5.
The CBI has defended Kejriwal’s arrest, telling the Supreme Court that it was necessary because the Delhi Chief Minister was “evasive and non-cooperative” when questioned about his role in the alleged excise policy scam.
