First-Ever Live Transcription Of Supreme Court Hearing

Court at a Glance

The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday have made their hearings to be transcribed live for the first time.

The constitution bench used Artificial Intelligence (AI) and technology powered by Natural Language Processing for live transcription of its hearings.

The live transcription was tested this morning in the courtroom of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, who was leading a constitution bench hearing a case related to the Maharashtra constitutional crisis.

Along with CJI DY Chandrachud, the bench comprised of Justice Hima Kohli, Justice Mukeshkumar Shah, Justice Aniruddha Bose and Justice Krishna Murari.

The transcription service is provided by TERES, a company that has been providing this service to arbitration practitioners for many years.

The Supreme Court is also expected to post transcripts of oral arguments on its website.

Senior Advocate Indira Jaising had previously suggested archiving audio transcripts of hearings in her plea for live-streaming of important cases.

In January 2023, a Bench headed by CJI Chandrachud had taken these suggestions on record.
