The Harvard Law School Center on the Legal Profession (HLS CLP) has decided to present its highest honour, the Award for Global Leadership for the year 2022 to Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud.
The coveted honour is being given to the CJI in recognition of his lifetime service to the legal profession in India and around the world.
The event, to be held online on January 11 at 7-8 pm IST, will witness participation of Professor David Wilkins, Faculty Director of HLS CLP. Professor Wilkins will also engage in conversation with the CJI during the function.
The Center brings together the leading academics, legal practitioners and thought leaders each year, to honour and recognise individuals, whose achievements have been impactful to the legal profession.
Professor Wilkins said, “I know how much india, and indeed the world, needs Justice Chandrachud’s leadership, particularly on issues such as mental health and the well-being of lawyers, which he spoke about so eloquently at our conference in 2017, long before the global pandemic placed this issue at the forefront of the profession’s consciousness.”
Past recipients of the award include Ambassador Samantha Power, Former US Permanent Representative to the United Nations and current Director of the Agency for International Development, Brad Smith, Vice Chair of Microsoft, and Kenneth Frazier, former Chair and CEO of Merck.
Justice Chandrachud, who holds an LLM and an SJD from Harvard Law School, took oath as the 50th Chief Justice of India on November 9 last year. He would retire on November 10, 2024.
