The hearing against Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh in a more than two-decade-old case was postponed on Monday due to the special judge of the MP-MLA court being on leave.

According to Singh’s lawyer, Madan Pratap Singh, no judicial proceedings could take place, and the date for the next hearing will be set once the judge returns.

Last Friday, Singh, a Rajya Sabha member, was unable to attend court because of the ongoing Parliament session, leading to the hearing being rescheduled for August 12 (Monday). Singh’s application explaining his absence was submitted to the court.

The case against Singh dates back to a 2001 protest over poor electricity supply. He, along with former SP MLA and national spokesperson Anoop Sanda, was scheduled to appear in court on Friday. On June 19, 2001, a demonstration was held near an overbridge close to the city’s Sabzi Mandi area, where Singh, Sanda, and others, including former councilors Kamal Srivastava, Vijay Kumar, Santosh, and Subhash Chaudhary, participated.

A case was registered against them at Kotwali Nagar Police Station, and all six were convicted by Special Magistrate Yogesh Yadav on January 11, 2023, receiving a sentence of three years’ imprisonment. Their appeal against the conviction was dismissed last Tuesday, and the sentence was upheld.
