Hemant Soren, former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, had approached the Supreme Court to challenge his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in relation to a money laundering investigation linked to an army land scam. But Supreme Court put it for tomorrow.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal brought up the matter on Thursday morning before Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, who agreed to schedule a hearing for Friday.

Sibal argued, “This has implications for the country’s governance. Is it permissible to arrest an individual in this manner?”

CJI Chandrachud responded, “We will schedule this for tomorrow.”

In the interim, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the ED, pointed out that Soren’s arrest had been contested the previous day in the Jharkhand High Court, which was set to address the issue later that day.

Sibal then stated that the plea before the High Court would be withdrawn, saying, “We are retracting it. We aimed for it to be heard last night. Kindly let the Supreme Court make the decision.”

Following his arrest by the ED in connection with a land scam money laundering investigation, Hemant Soren resigned from his position as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand the previous night.

Reports indicate that Champai Soren will assume the role of the State’s Chief Minister during Hemant Soren’s absence.
