Justice Sonia Gokani Became Gujarat HC's First Female Chief Justice, But Only For 9 Days

Justice Sonia G Gokani on Thursday took oath as Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, becoming the first woman to hold this position at the Gujarat High Court.

Governor Acharya Devvrat administered the oath to Justice Gokani in the presence of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Supreme Court Justice Bela M Trivedi, among others.

The Supreme Court Collegium recommended Justice Gokani’s name on February 9, following the elevation of the then Chief Justice, Aravind Kumar, to the Supreme Court. She is currently the senior-most judge of the Gujarat High Court.

She will serve as Chief Justice for only nine days before retiring on February 25.

Justice Gokani joined the judiciary directly in the cadre of district judges on July 10, 1995. On February 17, 2011, she was appointed as an additional judge of the Gujarat High Court, and on January 28, 2013, she was appointed as a permanent judge.
