Karnataka Assembly Polls: BJP Moves EC Against Sonia Gandhi’s ‘Karnataka Sovereignty’ Remark, Seeks Action

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday moved the Election Commission against former Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s remarks on ‘Karnataka’s sovereignty,’ which sparked a tremendous political storm in the run-up to the Karnataka assembly election.

Sonia Gandhi, UPA chairperson, made this ‘sovereignty’ remark in Hubbali on Saturday during  election rally.

Union minister Shobha Karandlaje filed the complaint against Sonia Gandhi on Monday and stated that she violated the provisions of the Model Code of Conduct and requested the EC to take action against her.

Karandlaje further stated, “Today we gave a complaint against Sonia Gandhi to the Election Commission. She delivered a speech in Hubbali regarding Karnataka’s sovereignty. We use sovereignty for the country. She is the leader of the ‘Tukde-Tukde’ gang. We demanded that a FIR be filed against her.”

The BJP sent a delegation to the poll panel office in the national capital.

“She (Sonia Gandhi) used the word sovereignty on purpose. The Congress manifesto is the agenda of the ‘Tukde-Tukde’ gang, and hence they are using such words. We are hopeful that the EC will take action against this anti-national act,” Union minister Bhupender Yadav stated while speaking to the media.

Sonia Gandhi spoke at a rally in Karnataka’s poll-bound Hubbali district on Saturday. “CPP Chairperson Smt. Sonia Gandhi ji sends a strong message to 6.5 crore Kannadigas: “The Congress will not allow anyone to pose a threat to Karnataka’s reputation, sovereignty, or integrity,” the Congress official Twitter handle stated.

The BJP in the complaint further stated that the implication of what Congress is stating is that the Congress believes Karnataka is separate from India, and the statement is divisive in nature, aiming at dividing citizens and creating a breach between two people from different states. “Karnataka is no different from India. This is a disturbing comment that is igniting divided feelings,” the BJP stated in a statement.
