Karnataka High Court issues notice, asks state about the steps taken to prevent illegal slaughtering of animals

The Karnataka High Court in the case Gau Gyan Foundation Versus The State of Karnataka observed and issued a notice to the stated government and the other respondents, seeking response about the step taken pursuant to its court order vide dated December 1, 2021., the order states for prevention of illegal slaughtering of animals in the state. The division bench comprising of Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi and Justice Sachin Shankar Magadum observed and issued a notice to the respondent on a petition filed by Gau Gyan Foundation and asked them to file a status report. In its order dated December 1, 2021, the court observed and stated that the answering respondents are directed to ensure no such illegal slaughtering animals is carried out in any district of the state. Moreover, immediate remedial measures shall be taken to ensure that no such illegal activities take place in any district of the state. Further in the present case, it was observed that the officers concerned shall be responded in case of such illegal slaughtering of animals is found by the authorities and the stringent action shall be taken including the criminal action against the person involved in illegal slaughtering of animals. It was submitted by Advocate Rudrappa P appearing for the petitioner submitted that even after passing the above order, no action is taken by respondents and several FIRs have been lodged. Adding to which the bench stated that the petitioner shall implead the licensing authority of the local body who has issued the license for slaughtering and transportation of animals. In the present case, in its order dated December 1, 2021, the court observed and issued the various directions to state and concerning authority to ensure that such illegal slaughtering of animals in the state is not carried and the illegal transportation of animals in states shall be stopped. Moreover, the respondent took no effective steps due to which these illegal activities are continuing in the state, particularly in Mandya, Hassan, Tumkuru and Bengaluru districts. A status report to be filled and the AGA may seek instructions about the steps taken pursuant to the above court directions. Accordingly, after two weeks the matter will be heard next.
